WHAT IS IT?

The Ethics Committee is unique. It exists to determine HBA Code of Ethics violations by Members when a written complaint is received.

WHO SHOULD JOIN?

You have the ability to ‘see’ what others can’t? When you read about two sides of an argument or debate, do you find yourself as an honest broker in determining fault?

Are you fair? Are you ethical? Do you consider yourself to have integrity? Have you read the Code of Ethics? Do you agree with it?

If you want to help police our industry and keep the HBA standards high, than this is the Committee for you.

WHAT DO COMMITTEE MEMBERS DO?

When a Member is accused of wrong-doing, in writing, that violates the HBA’s Code of Ethics, the committee is convened.

The accusation may be from the public, from another Member, or an inquiry by the Board of Directors. No matter how the issue is brought to the Committee, its job is to research, inquire, and recommend action to the Board.

The first step of the committee, after reviewing the written complaint, is to contact the HBA Member for their “side of the story”. In the end, it is simple. Should the accused be allowed to remain a Member of the HBA or be removed from Membership?

HOW OFTEN DO THEY GATHER?

As needed. There are years in which the Ethics Committee does not meet at all. Other times, they are very busy. Usually, it is the former, not the latter.

TO WHOM DO THEY REPORT?

Once agreed upon by majority vote at the Committee level, a representative of the Committee recommends action items to the HBA Board of Directors for the Board to make a final decision.

Committees have no authority on their own. They cannot bind the association, decide action, or change Membership status. Committees serve the Board of Directors.

WHAT’S THE INSIDE SCOOP?

Committees are a great place to hone your leadership skills, make a difference in the construction industry, get to know folks, and be known.

The Ethics Committee is for you if you are the very straightest of arrows. If you “walk the walk” and that walk is the high road. Plus, you consider yourself a fair judge, then this Committee will be better with yourself involvement.

If you do not police the industry, who will?
